Founded in 1896 as a catalog mail order company, Sears began expanding into retail operations in 1925. Sears retained a heavy catalog sales focus, releasing its first Sears Wishbook Christmas catalog in 1933, but its aggressive retail expansion strategy helped the company gain market share over older rival Wards, particularly after World War II, when Sears began opening stores in new suburban areas.
Sears terminated its general merchandise catalog in 1993 to focus on its retail stores, which were struggling under heavy competition from discount chains. It was acquired by Kmart in 2005, but continues to operate as a separate line. Sears reintroduced its holiday Wishbook in 2007, albeit in a smaller version.
