Montgomery Ward, or Wards, started life as a catalog mail order business in 1872. The concept proved extremely popular, and by 1883 the catalog had expanded to include more than 10,000 items. In 1896, rival Sears issued its first catalog, and the two companies battled for market dominance throughout most of the 20th century.
Wards expanded into retail in 1926, and in 1939, a Christmas promotion led to the creation of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. However, Wards lost market share following World War II, when the company was slow to open stores in the suburbs. Still, Wards remained a highly popular and trusted name through the 1990s, when it finally lost the battle against such discount behemoths as Kmart and Walmart.
Wards closed in 2001, but soon returned to its roots. The company reopened as an online retailer in 2004, streamlining operations back to the days of the mail order catalog. The Wards name is still synonymous with long-lasting, durable goods, including a variety of appliances. Still, Wards appliances, like any others, are not impervious to breakdowns. When that occurs, America’s Appliance Repair is here for you.
